Application Information / Instructions

Information

Self-Help Federal Credit Union (SHFCU) will establish and fund an annual scholarship for $1000 to be awarded by each credit union branch in CA, IL, and WI.

Purpose

SHFCU will provide financial assistance to those who are improving their lives by furthering their education and have shown a commitment to improving their community.

Eligibility

Those who have been accepted to attend, or are attending any post-secondary (beyond high school) educational institution will be eligible. Eligible institutions include junior colleges, universities, colleges, technical schools, trade and vocational institutions. SHFCU employees, board and committee members and their immediate families are not eligible.

Application Process

All applicants must submit a completed scholarship application by the deadline date.

  • Application deadline: June 30, 2020 at 11:59:59 PM PDT
  • Applicants are eligible for (1) SHFCU Community Scholarship
  • Scholarship recipients will be notified and will be invited to attend a congratulatory luncheon at the branch

Scholarship Amount

The amount to be awarded is $1000 from the credit union you listed in your Scholarship Application.

About the Selection Process

A selection committee (committee) made up of at least 5 Self-Help Federal Credit Union representative will review each application. The committee will meet as soon as possible after the application deadline to review and assess all applications.

Award Selection Criteria

  • Complete the scholarship application within set guidelines;
  • Attend a two, four year college, vocational school, or university within the award year;
  • Demonstrated a need for financial assistance;
  • Applicant must be highly regarded by peers for being a role model through actions and deeds; while making improvements and achieving successes with or on behalf of others.

Distribution of Award

The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient’s school. The funds may be used for tuition, room, board, books, or materials. A letter of acceptance or proof of enrollment from an educational institution is required. This letter may be submitted with the application or any time prior to the payment.

Application/Essay Instructions

Please read the questions carefully before submitting your essay.

1: On a separate document, respond to the essay questions below. Limit your answer to 150 words for each short essay question.

  • What college, vocational school, or university are you attending or do you plan to attend after you graduate from high school? If undecided, list up to 3 schools that you are considering. Please share what reason(s) contributed to your decision?
  • What are you planning to study (major/minor) and what do you plan to do once you graduate?
  • What would you say differentiates you from other applicants or why should you be awarded the scholarships?
  • Explain how you have helped a family member, a particular individual, or group in your community. Share the impact your support has had on the family member, particular individual or group. Please provide specific examples.
  • Describe a challenge or obstacle you have faced in the last 5 years that has positively impacted you. What, specifically, did you learn about yourself from this experience and how will you use what you learned in the future?
  • Discuss an accomplishment, event, and or experience that sparked a period of personal growth and or lessons learned. In what ways did you grow? What did you learn and how will you use what you learned in the future?
